After some short films and documentaries, Jaco Van Dormael (1957) made Toto le heros (1991). Toto is a poetic and even philosophical film about an old man looking back on his life. As an (utterly unreliable) narrator, the protagonist guides the viewer through a complex intertwining of storylines, flashbacks and invented memories.
