This Flemish-Dutch heritage film is based on the 1927 novel Mira, by the Flemish writer Stijn Streuvels (1871-1969). The production was a balancing act between Flanders and The Netherlands: on the one hand the subject matter and literary source are distinctively Flemish and the screenplay is written by Flemish writer Hugo Claus; on the other hand the film is directed by the Dutch director Fons Rademakers and the main actress, Willeke Van Ammelrooy is also a native of The Netherlands. The film was a big box-office success in both countries and became for a while a trend-setter demonstrating the potential of Flemish-Dutch co-productions.
