Spanning volgens Hitchcock: vertel het publiek in de eerste scène hoe de vork aan de steel zit en laat het dan in spanning afwachten tot ook de personages daar achter komen.

De Vertigo credit sequentie is van de hand van Saul Bass. Bass tekende ook voor de titels van Hitchcocks North by Northwest en Psycho. Met zijn echtgenote Elaine vezorgde hij vele jaren later ook de titels voor Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas (1990), Age of Innocence (1993) en Casino (1995).
